Storytelling around the World (1) / Cuentacuentos en el mundo (1)

Storytelling around the World -1-

Storytellers belong to the old line of puppeteers, jugglers and magicians who went from village to village and town to town.

In Japan, storytellers carrying Kamishibai (storycard theaters) traveled on bicycles through scattered settlements from the ninth century until the mid-20th century. It is said there were more than 50,000 of these storytellers during the golden age of Kamishibai between 1930 and 1950. With the coming of television in 1950, the "electric Kamishibai" on their bicycles were reduced to almost nothing. Television was the scythe of storytelling in Japan.
